Puppy Kindergarten

A "head start" for puppies - includes socialization and early training issues. This class provides shaping of basic manners, learning how to learn and vital early (pre-four month) play groups with dogs and people.

We offer the AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for all puppies in our classes. Participation is not required to attend classes. For more information on S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure .

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes; class limited to 10 puppies. Puppies attend all classes.
Fee: $125 per puppy Family and friends are welcome to attend with puppies
Prerequisites: Please bring puppies on flat collars or harnesses and a 4 to 6 foot leash Please do not bring them on choke, prong or other correction collars or on retractible leashes
Dog Details: Puppies 10-16 weeks old, at least one basic distemper combination vaccine. Puppies do not have to have completed the puppy vaccine series and do not need the Rabies vaccine to attend class.

Basic Obedience

Develop or refresh your handling skills and learn to control your dog while your dog learns the basic skills of self-control: Sit, Down, Stay, Stand, Wait, Leave It, Come, and Heel. This class addresses management and training for being a good companion.

The AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for dogs under 1 year is available in Basic Obedience classes held Tuesday evenings, Friday mornings & for Saturday Small Dog. Participation is not required to attend the class. For more information on S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $125.00 per dog.  Family and friends are welcome at no extra charge 
Prerequisites: Please bring your dog on a flat collar, harness or head collar.  Do not bring dogs on a choke, prong or other correction collar. You will need a 4' to 6' training lead. No retractable leashes in class, please.

Small Dog Basic Obedience

For dogs under 25 lbs. This version of our basic obedience will help you with special handling and management considerations for small to toy-sized dogs.

Intermediate Obedience

Improve your dog's reliability by developing faster response rates and building reliability into the basic skills. Develop your dog's attention, attitude and accuracy. Going in the direction of off-leash work.

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $100 per dog
Prerequisites: Dogs must have completed a basic obedience course or have reasonably good responses to down, sit, stay and heel. Dogs must be able to work next to other dogs.
Dog Details: Over 4 months of age. Best results if dog is over 6 months

Novice Sport Obedience

This class is based on AKC competition obedience skills and will give you a foundation for obedience competitionand other precision work with your dog. These exercises also transfer into handy skills for everyday life with your dog and includes off leash work. Novice exercises include: Heel on leash, Heel Free, Figure 8, Stand for Examination, Fronts and Finishes, Recall from 30', Group Sit-Stay and Down-Stay for 3 minutes at distance. Sharpen your dog's responsiveness and enhance your off-leash control whether or not you are planning to campaign your dog. The class is taught by Nancy Frensley, who is an active and successful competitor in AKC obedience and other dog sports.

Class Details: AKC now registers mixed breeds and other dogs of unknown ancestry for performance competition events. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $75 for a 6-week  class-Summer Special. Ends September 1
Prerequisites: Dogs should  have completed an Intermediate obedience course and/or have reliable responses to down, sit, stay and heel. Dogs should be mature, friendly and safe with other dogs and people.

Dogs With Attitude - DWA

This class focuses on dog to dog aggression and leash reactivity. It takes commitment and skill to change such strong, driven behaviors so we immerse you and your dog in helpful techniques and routines. This is a group behavior modification class that requires attendance at a no-dogs orientation before admission. Some dogs may elect to have a private evalution or consult before the class begins or during it. Although it is not suitable for dogs aggressive toward humans, we offer private consultations and behavior plans to address those situations.
Class Details: Series of 5-forty-five minute classes, plus a 2 hour orientation. Meets every other week since the  behavior modalities take time to master. The first session is a dog-free orientation which will enable you to decide if this is the right class for you.
Fee: $200 (no pre-payment required for orientation).
Prerequisites: You must attend the orientation session in order to participated in the class.
Dog Details: One year old or older.  A maximum of six dogs are allowed in this class.

Puppy K-2

This class is a continuation of early puppy k. It adds a lot more obedience training but still includes pay periods during the class for adolescent socialization and development of good play manners. The obedience focus is on getting your puppy to understand walking on leash with you, getting reliable responsees to sit, down stay and come and working through adolescent challenges.

Class Details: The curriculum is designed to include training games that you can use on outings and at home to train your puppy.
Fee: $75 for 6 weekly classes. Summer Special.  Ends September 1
Prerequisites: Puppies should be 4 to 8 months of age and have completed an early puppy k class anywhere.
Dog Details: Completion of the puppy distemper vaccine series is required.

Introduction to Nosework

Harness your dog's natural instincts and desire to hunt and use his nose with techniques similar to those used to train detection dogs. 

You and your dog will have fun, build confidence and use mental and physical energy during class and during homework sessions. The intro class focuses on interior and container searches.  Workshops for special types of searches will be offered to students who complete the Introduction to Nosework class.

Instructor Nancy Frensley is a Certified Nosework Instructor of the National Association of K-9 Scentwork (NACSW) and offers a class curriculum that is suitable to prepare your dog for nosework competitions as well as  for fun. 

Class Details: Six week class for dogs 4 months and older. Each class is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes long, depending on the size of the class.Dogs will work individually in the class format.  While it's helpful to have a dog that is highly food or toy motivated, it's not necessary.  Sometimes dogs just have to "find" their abilities to enjoy them.
Fee: $100.00 for a six week class
Prerequisites: Vaccinations: Your dog must be current on DHLPP and Rabies.  If you have taken a class with us within the last year, you do not need to submit a vaccination form. Prerequisites: Dogs in this class must be able to stay in a crate out of sight of their owners for short periods of time.

Let's Just Walk

This class offers a series of exercises, which, if practiced will increase your dog's ability to focus on you and improve communication between handler and dog.  The goal is relaxed walking with the dog maintaining a slack leash.

Class Details: Series of 4-45 minute classes. Meets weekly . Dogs attend all classes The final class will meet on a Sunday. It will be a field trip to a park to work in real-life situations. (We will probably meet at Cesar Chavez Park in the morning).
Fee: $90 for a 4-week class
Prerequisites: Dogs should have some basic obedience training and respond to Sit, Down & Stay.

Rally Obedience

For the connoisseur of dog training, rally obedience challenges you and your dog on flowing obedience courses that build great attention, good timing, and versatility. Includes exercises from both AKC Rally and APDT Rally-O. * This is a good class for both competition level and fun level training. All the basic, plus much more.

The American Kennel club now welcomes mixed breed dogs in all performance competitions.

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour sessions.   Class meets weekly. For November 7 through December 12, Classes will be on a drop in basis.  Enroll in Rally Drop in for those dates.  http://www.berkeleyhumane.org/dogtraining/schedule#rallydropinclass Pre registration preferred but not necessary.

Canine Good Citizen Class & Certification

This class will prepare you and your dog for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test. This title and certification are bestowed by the American Kennel Club and show that your dog can handle real life activities, people and other dogs in a calm and safe way. This class gives you an opportunity to practice all ten exercises required for the CGC. All who pass the test receive a certificate from American Kennel Club and are entitled to wear CGC insignia. This is a must for potential service and therapy dogs.

The test is open to all dogs (mixed or purebred). The class is not a pre-requisite for taking the test. Day of test entries taken.

Dog Tricks And Useful Skills

A new twist on the basic dog tricks class. Make your dog a helpmate by teaching the skills of picking up things for you, opening and closing doors, and turning on lights. Learn to capture, lure and sequence your dog's natural behaviors into Shake, Hi 5, Play Dead, Beg, Rollover, Say a Prayer and Crawl.  Teach your dog with a clicker to retrieve items for you and put them where you ask. 

Class Details: Series of 4 one-hour classes that meets every other week. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $75 per dog  Summer Special.  Ends September 1

Outwitting Your Dog

Explore a variety of techniques to resolve jumping up, running away,lunging, plunging, piracy and plundering as well as other unruly behavior. Four weeks to doggie Zen. This is focused training for exuberant, but not aggressive,pooches. This class will challenge you and your dog and you will get results.

Class Details: Series of 4 one-hour classes that meet every week. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $90.00 per dog
Prerequisites: None.
Dog Details: Over 4 months of age and up-to-date vaccines.

DWA-Orientation

This is the orientation session for Dogs With Attitude, a class designed to teach you and your dog techniques for changing dog-reactive behavior. Techniques and protocols used in this class will also help change your dog's behavior if practiced long-term.
Class Details: One 2-hour session: This orientation is for people only. It is a presentation that will give you solid, science-based information about your dog's behavior and will help you decide on a course of action that might include taking the following six weeks of class, getting a private consult and customized training plan or continue to work on your own. This session is mandatory for attendance at the other DWA sessions. DWA registration will be posted on the website after the Orientation.NO DOGS MAY ATTEND THIS SESSION.
Fee: $10 per person Preregistration is required.  Payment is by check or cash at the session. 
Prerequisites: ATTENDANCE AT THE ORIENTATION IS MANDATORY TO ENROLL IN DWA CLASS. The class will start within two weeks after the orientation. You will not be accepted in this  class unless you have attended the orientation.
Dog Details: Dogs taking this class should be over 1 year of age and be up to date on basic distemper combination and rabies vaccinations.

K-9 Nosework Introduction to Odor

This is the second stage of Nosework.  In this stage, we introduce a target odor.  Using the guidelines of the National Association of Canine Scentwork, we introduce the essential oil of Birch, also recognized as Wintergreen.   The dog will learn to identify this scent and locate the highest concentration of it.

Class Details: Once odor has been introduced, the dog is no longer searching for food.  We will also work on procedures for passing the Odor Recognition Test (ORT) and trialing procedures.  If you want to do this for fun, once you learn how to introduce odor, you can teach your dog find a number of different scents Nancy Frensley, CNWI is a certified nosework instructor of the National Association of Canine Scentwork (NACSW) Class meets weekly for six weeks.  
Fee: $75.00 per dog  for six weeks. Summer Special.  Ends September 1
Prerequisites: Dogs must have completed and Introduction to Nosework class with a qualified instructor.  Trainer approval required if you have not completed our Introduction to Nosework class.

Leash Crazies

Does your dog go ape at the end of the leash when you encounter other dogs or even people? Do have difficulty getting your dog to walk calmly past other dogs while on leash? This out of control behavior is a common problem caused by a number of interacting factors.

This two hour workshop for the human end of the leash only. It is designed to give you some insight as to why this happens. We will give you some handling routines to help you handle your dog and to start changing the way he or she behaves in response to the everyday happenings out in the world.

Class Details: Using a powerpoint presentation, lecture, discussion and role playing we will coach you to handle your dog effectively on leash and change out of control behavior to calm behavior. This workshop will give you a chance to explore why this happens and what you can do to start reversing the situation at your end of the leash.
Fee: $20 per person
Prerequisites: None.
Dog Details: This class is for PEOPLE ONLY. Please do not bring your dog.

Crate Training Workshop-Free

Learn how to teach your puppy or adult dog to go willingly into a crate and remain quiet and peaceful while crated. Crate training greatly enhances house training efforts as well as being a good tool for use in many behavior adjustment programs. 

Class Details: We will use games to get dogs and puppies to rush into their crates and wait for permission to come out.  Crate games habituate your dog to crating and add to the list of manners your dog has.  A dog that is crate tolerant is a manageable and mobile dog. This class is a one-time, hour and half session.
Fee: Free.  Preregistration  is required.  We require 4 registrations to hold class. Crates will be provided or you can bring your own. 
Prerequisites: Puppies must be over 10 weeks and have at least two of the puppy vaccinations (proof required at door).  Adult dogs should also have up to date vaccinations.

Small Dog Intermediate Obedience

Small Dog Intermediate obedience follows the regular Intermediate class curriculum which allows you to improve upon your dog's foundation obedience skills and points you toward reliable off leash control. 

It offers a training environment exclusive to small dogs and allows troubleshooting of small dog specific behavior challenges-such as, alarm barking, fears and defensive behaviors.

Fee: $100 for 6 weeks of instruction
Prerequisites: Your dog must have taken a basic obedience class or be fluent with Sit, Down, Stay and Come in a class setting.
Dog Details: Dogs should be over 6 months of age and have some class manners established.

Nosework-Continuing

If you have taken Introduction to Nosework and/or Introduction to Odor, these two hour sessions will give you practice, or introduce you and your dog to both vehicle search and exterior search. Emphasis will be on recognition of finds and handling.

Class Details: Vehicle search will be done on a regular 4' to 6'  leash.  Exterior search will be done on a long line.  The long line will be provided or you can bring your own.  These session usually take place off site and dogs will stay in cars or crates when not working. Crates will not be provided but you may bring your own.  Dogs already on odor will work odor and dogs not on odor will search for food.      
Fee: $15 per dog per session payable by paypal invoice or by check at the class session.
Prerequisites: Dog must have taken Introduction to Nosework with any nosework instructor.
Dog Details: Dogs must be over 4 months of age and vaccinated.  Puppies and young dogs ok if they can stay calmly in your car. Your car/truck must be adequately ventilated so that your dog is not uncomfortable.

Clicker Savvy

In this 2-hour seminar style class, learn clicker basics: Principles of Operant Conditioning, Mechanical Skill of Clicker Use,How to shape a behavior from nothing to a behavior that happens reliably on cue. 

Class Details: We will use natural and trick behaviors to develop skill along with slides and discussion. 
Fee: $15.00
Prerequisites: Dogs must be well behaved and have a foundation of attention on the handler.  This is not a basic obedience course.
Dog Details: Dogs must be vaccinated and over 1 year of age

Dog Tricks-2

This class is a continuation of Dog Tricks and Useful skills for the former trick student or anyone who has some tricks in development and wants to move forward with guidance and coaching. It will increase communication between dog and handler and further develop each dog's IQ.
Class Details: The class will meet for 4 sessions, every other week.  It is primarily a clicker class.  In the first tricks class the students worked on mastering mechanical skill with the clicker and rewards and shaping behaviors.  This section will work on criteria changes, makeing clean cues and geting trick behaviors to flow.  New behaviors are invited.
Fee: $75 for dogs.  No charge for the people
Prerequisites: Dogs will need reasonable obedience and focus since they will be working off lead much of the time.  Handlers should have some skill with the clicker or verbal markers and good control over their dogs.
Dog Details: Dogs should be over 8 months of age and be current on vaccinations.
