Thank you for your interest in interning at Berkeley Humane! We have internship opportunities year-round, and can work with students to accommodate school schedules and responsibilities. We pride ourselves on the training and hands-on experience we provide, and encourage those without experience to apply!

Current Internship Opportunities


VETERINARY HOSPITAL INTERNSHIPS

Berkeley Humane Veterinary Hospital Volunteer Internships offer the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a shelter hospital and adoption center. Interns will gain valuable experience in shelter care, basic medical procedures, animal husbandry/housing and more. 

All internships are unpaid, but course credit can be arranged. Upon successful completion of an internship, interns may also request a letter of recommendation from their supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Work closely with hospital staff to ensure proper feeding, cleaning, housing, and oversight of animals according to Berkeley Humane standards 
-Partner with staff on basic medical procedures 
-Assist with surgical prep and post-surgery recovery 
-Partner with hospital staff to ensure animals have a clean, safe environment 
-Participate in routine animal care 
-Enter information into database as needed 
-Assist with administrative duties as needed 
-Assist in monitoring health of all animals

REQUIREMENTS

-Pre-vet and veterinary students preferred

-Professional animal handling experience (includes volunteer work)
-Comfortable learning new computer programs 
-Able to commit to 10+ weeks 
-Able to commit to 20+ hours per week 
-Able to bend, stoop, squat, reach, and push moderately heavy objects 
-Able to lift 50lbs 
-No allergic conditions which would be aggravated by animals in our care 

-Comfortable working with unknown animals
-Comfortable with loud noises, dog/cat bodily fluids

APPLYING

Applications are accepted four times per year:
-Winter: Approx. January 1 – March 31 (applications accepted November 15 – December 15)
-Spring: Approx. April 1 – June 30 (applications accepted February 15 – March 15)
-Summer: Approx. July 1 – August 30 (applications accepted May 15 – June 15)
-Fall: Approx. September 1 – December 31 (applications accepted July 15 – August 15)

 

Applicants who have completed a 3 month Animal Care Internship with Berkeley Humane will be given priority. Please read below for information on how to apply for an Animal Care Internship.

ANIMAL CARE INTERNSHIPS

The Animal Care Internship program is designed to offer our interns the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, basic skills, and hands-on experience caring for cats and dogs in a fast-paced shelter environment. This is particularly useful for students planning to apply to vet school or looking to pursue a career in the animal care field as interns will gain valuable experience in shelter care, basic medical observations, and more. Non-students are welcome to apply as well!

This internship is an unpaid volunteer position, but we are happy to arrange course credit. Upon successful completion of an internship, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and Letter of Recommendation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

-Work closely with staff to ensure proper feeding, cleaning, housing, and oversight of animals according to Berkeley Humane standards
-Follow behavior and medical plans set forth by animal care and veterinary staff
-Enter information into animal database as needed
-Assist in monitoring health and behavior of all animals
-When appropriate, be responsive to visitor inquiries
-Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

-Excellent customer service experience and/or skills
-Passion for exceptional animal care
-Comfortable learning new computer programs and familiarity with PC use, including Microsoft Office programs
-Comfortable working with a diverse population of animals and people
-Able to commit to 3+ months
-Able to commit to 20+ hours per week, including some weekends
-Able to bend, stoop, squat, reach, and push moderately heavy objects
-Able to lift 50lbs.
-No allergic conditions which would be aggravated by animals in our care
-Professional animal handling experience (including volunteer experience) is preferred but not required

PROGRAM COORDINATION INTERNSHIPS

Berkeley Humane volunteer Program Coordination Internships offer the opportunity to partner with the Volunteer Manager to manage the volunteer program. Interns will gain valuable experience in managing a program.

All internships are unpaid, but course credit can be arranged. Upon successful completion of an internship, interns may also request a letter of recommendation from their supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Work closely with staff to ensure volunteer satisfaction
-Lead volunteer trainings
-Enter information into volunteer database as needed
-Communicate with potential and current volunteers
-Partner with staff on volunteer recruitment strategies

REQUIREMENTS

-Comfortable learning new computer programs
-Comfortable working with a diverse population of animals and people
-Able to commit to 3+ months
-Able to commit to 10+ hours per week, including some weekends
-Able to bend, stoop, squat, reach, and push moderately heavy objects
-No allergic conditions which would be aggravated by animals in our care
