HOPE MEDICAL - Leo
Nothing prepared us for this. When we saw Leo for the first time, our heart just broke. He was extremely dirty, his fur was severely matted, and foxtails were embedded in countless places. This tangled mess was so bad it was actually restricting his movement. We knew we needed to act quickly.
We assembled a team of volunteers and staff who began to cautiously untangle and shave his fur. We gave him a soothing bath, began treating his wounds and started him on a course of antibiotics. A complete medical exam uncovered that Leo had additional health conditions which included pneumonia and severe ulcers on both of his eyes.
Poor Leo was in horrible shape and it was pretty clear that he was not strong enough to endure surgery on his eyes. This is when Dr. Sarah, Berkeley Humane’s Medical Director, got creative. She researched, developed and applied a custom serum that began to alleviate and heal the ulcers in Leo’s eyes!
Leo was in our constant care for nearly two months before he fully recovered and became ready for adoption. Today, Leo is able to see and run, and can be found spending his time frolicking alongside his new loving family at local parks.
Thanks to the patience of our volunteers, creativity of our medical team, and the generous, compassionate support from people like you, Leo was given a second chance to live a happy life.
