Dog Training Schedule

We offer a wide variety of classes to appeal to the interests and talents of many different types of people and dogs. Our class offerings range from behavior modification classes to classes for fun and competition.

 

Classes are held in our Behavior and Training Center between 8th and 9th Streets on Carleton in Berkeley.

Puppy Kindergarten

 This class is a "head start" for puppies 10 to 16 weeks of age that includes socialization, setting play boundaries and early training issues. This class provides shaping of basic manners, learning how to learn, and vital early (pre-four month) play groups with dogs and people.

Early Puppy K is recommended by The American Veterinary Medical Association and by the American Society of Veterinary Behaviorists. AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization

We offer the AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for all puppies in our classes. Participation is not required to attend classes. For more information on the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure

Class Details: Series of 6/50 minute classes; class limited to 10 puppies. Puppies attend all classes.
Fee: $160 per puppy for 6 weekly classes. Family and friends are welcome to attend with puppies.
Prerequisites: Please bring puppies on flat collars or harnesses and a 4 to 6 foot leash. Please do not bring them on choke, prong or other correction collars or on retractable leashes.
Dog Details: For puppies 10-16 weeks old with two doses of the basic distemper combination vaccine completed. . Puppies do not have to complete the puppy vaccine series and do not need the Rabies vaccine to attend class.

Leash Crazies

This is a presention about on-leash reactivity, how it develops, what maintains it and what you can do to change this in your dog.   It is an overview style presention for people only.  It uses slides, discussion and demonstrations with the trainer's dogs to help you understand and make informed decisions about how to treat this behavior.

Basic Obedience

 Dogs teach us to live in the present, embrace simplicity and embody fun.  In exchange we give them safety, comfort and companionship. Foundation training seals that contract for both ends of the leash and is essential for keeping your dog safe and comfortable as a member of your household.

Develop or refresh your handling skills while you and your dog develop foundation skills for interaction with you and the world.  Develop self-control in sit, down, stay, wait, leave it, come and heel. This class addresses both management and training for being a fantastic companion.

 The AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for dogs under one year is available in Basic Obedience classes taught by CGC Evaluators. Participation is not required to attend the class. For more information on the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure.

Small Dog Basic Obedience

For dogs under 25 lbs. This version of foundation obedience  will help you with the special handling and management considerations of small and toy-sized dogs as well as the foundation skills of Sit,Down, Stay, Come, Leave It, Heel and all the behaviors taught in our regular foundation classes.

The AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program is now offered  for puppies under 1 year in classes taught by CGC evaluators.  Participation is not required to attend classes. For more information on the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC Brochure.

Intermediate Obedience

Improve your dog's reliability by developing faster and more durable response rates and building confidence.  Training games to make learning fast and fun.

This class covers increased recall  and stay reliability with distractions, leave it alone, gaining distance and duration in all social manners behaviors and walking close to you when you need it. Develop your dog's attention, attitude, and accuracy as a companion.

Class Details: Series of 6 50 m inute classes. Dogs attend all classes. Intermediate is designed to advance dog and handler obedience skills and is not helpful for resolving behavior problems beyond obedience training

Prerequisites: Dogs must have completed basic obedience course or have reasonably good responses to sit, down, stay and heel. Some later sessions may include off leash work. Rally Obedience

Rally obedience challenges you and your dog on flowing obedience courses that build great attention, good timing, and versatility. This is a good class for both competition-level and fun-level training.  It emphasizes heeling with attention, which is an enjoyable form of exercise and activity and provides mental challenges as well.  Whether for competitive events or the fun of working with your dog, heel with attention builds focus and intensity to your relationship.

Rally is an obedience based sport and is not agility training.

The American Kennel Club now welcomes mixed breed dogs in all performance competitions.

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour sessions. We cover all 29 of the Rally Novice Exercises
Fee: $80 per dog
Prerequisites: Basic Obedience to a reasonably reliable level.
Dog Details: Over 6 months of age is best. Dogs will be moving around each other and will have times when they need to be put on briefly on a tie down or be in a crate while you walk the course. You may bring an extra person to manage your dog if you prefer.

Lets Just Walk-On The Town

This class offers a series of exercises, which, if practiced, will increase your dog's ability to focus and will improve communication and teamwork between you and your dog while out on walks.  

If relaxed walking  is your goal, this class will help you with handling so that your dog og maintains a slack leash and a connection to you.

Dog Tricks and Performance Skills

Tricks are a great way to pass the time on rainy days, when you are feeling blue, or any time you want to have fun with your dog Or your dog wants to have fun with you.

Get your dog ready to entertain at holiday parties or pet therapy visits and give your dog a job at the same time. Or, go for the new Trick Title from AKC.  We will work on it all.  

In this class you will learn to capture, lure and shape our dog's natural behaviors into Shake, High-5, Play Dead, Beg, Rollover, Say a Prayer, Get a Tissue, and Crawl-plus others of your choice.

Class Details: Series of 6 50 minute classes that meet weekly. Dogs attend all classes. Emphasis is on clicker training but clickers are not required for dogs that do not respond well to them.
Fee: $95 per dog.
Prerequisites: Dogs should have enough basic obedience skills to be able to focus during class. Ability to work off leash a plus.

Dogs With Attitude - Orientation

ATTENDANCE AT THIS ORIENTATION IS MANDATORY FOR ENROLLMENT IN DWA CLASS.

This is the Orientation Session for "Dogs with Attitude" (DWA), a class designed to teach you and our dog techniques for changing reactive behavior. Techniques and protocols used in this class will help change your dog's behavior if practiced long-term.

This is one 2-hour seminar style session for PEOPLE ONLY. The presentation will give you solid, science-based information about your dog's behavior and sociability and will help you decide on a course of action that might include either taking the "Dogs With Attitude" five-week course, getting a private consult and customized training plan, or continuing to work on your own. This session is mandatory for attendance at the following DWA sessions. DWA class registration will not be opened until the orientation is completed.

Class Details: One 2-hour session. NO DOGS MAY ATTEND THIS SESSION. Note: This session is at 8:00 PM. All following sessions of the class will be from 7 to 8 PM

Prerequisites: ATTENDANCE AT THIS ORIENTATION IS MANDATORY TO ENROLL IN DWA CLASS. The class with dogs will start within two weeks of the orientation. You will not be accepted into the DWA class unless you have attended the orientation.

Canine Good Citizen Class and Certification

This class will prepare you and your dog to pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test. This is a title and certification bestowed by the American Kennel Club that shows that your dog can handle real life activities, people, and other dogs in a calm and safe way.

The class gives you an opportunity to practice all ten exercise required for the CGC. All who pass the test receive a certificate from American Kennel Club and are entitled to wear CGC insignia. This is a must for potential service and therapy dogs.

The test is open to all dogs (mixed or purebred). This class is not a pre-requisite for taking the test. Day-of test entries are permitted, see test-only class.

Canine Good Citizen Certification - Test Only

All who pass this test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club and are entitled to wear the CGC insignia. This is a must for potential service and therapy dogs.

Class Details: Please preregister for the test. Bring your dog on a regular flat collar or harness (no choke, prong, or other correction collars or restrictive harnesses are allowed) RE: 7/29 This will be a test only day from 11 to 2 PM. We can take registrants between 11 and 1. We will make appointments once you are registered. Bring your own brush if you prefer for the appearance and grooming test.
Fee: $20 per dog.
Prerequisites: Dog should be adequately trained to perform the requirements without food rewards, reprimands or corrections.

Community Canine Advanced_CGC

After completing the Canine  Good Citizen certification, you and your dog are ready to prepare for the  CGCA: Community Canine title.  The CGC is tested in a simulated environment.  The CGCA will be tested in real life situations, showing beyond a doubt that your dog exhibits good manners in most normal situations. 

This class will meet in a variety of locations during the 5 week session.  Testing could be done at a park or other busy location.

Class Details: This class is 5 weeks/1 hour per week. Testing is on Week 5 It is a titling class of the AKC . Dogs that test must have an AKC number (See prerequisites). However, we welcome you to take the class without registering your dog if you want the work but do not want to test. No make up classes are available. Be sure you can attend all sessions. If you miss the first session, you will be dropped from the class and issued a refund.
Fee: $130.00
Prerequisites: Dogs must have passed the Canine Good Citizen test. Because the test leads to and AKC title, Participating dogs should prepare to register their dogs with American Kennel Club. Nosework 1-Introduction to Hunting for Scent

Harness your dog's natural instincts and love of hunting by teaching search skills. We use techniques similar to those used to train professional detection dogs. 

You and your dog will have fun, build confidence and use mental and physical energy during class and during homework sessions. The intro class focuses on interior and container searches. Workshops for special types of searches will be offered to students who complete the Introduction to Nosework class.

Instructor Nancy Frensley is an NACSW certified nosework instructor and offers a class curriculum that is suitable to prepare your dog for nosework competitions as well as for fun.

Class Details: Each class is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes long, depending on the size of the class. Dogs will work individually within the class format.
Fee: $110.00 per dog. LImited to 6 dogs per class. for the 6 week class.
Prerequisites: Vaccinations: Your dog should be current on Distemper Combination and Rabies. If you have taken a class with us within the last year, you do not need to submit a vaccination form. Prerequisites: Dogs in this class must be able to stay in a crate out of sight of their owners
Dog Details: Dogs aged 4 months and older. Nor previous hunting experience required. Dog should be moderately comfortable in a dog crate for short periods of time.

Nosework 2 - Introduction to Hunting for Odors

 This is the second stage of Nosework in which we work with target odors. We primarily use essential oil of Birch, but will add odors for more experienced teams. The dog will learn to identify this scent and locate the highest concentration of it in a number of challenging scent pictures.

Once odor has been introduced, the dog is no longer searching for food. We will also work on procedures for passing an odor recognition test (ORT) and trialing procedures. If you want to do this for fun, once you learn how to introduce odor, you can teach your dog to find a number of different scents.

RALLY PRACTICE

Rally practice is designed Rally enthusiasts who have already been through a class with their dogs and want to hone their ability to work with their dog as a team to execute the Rally exercises.  You can do courses with coaching or without.  It is good preparation for those who would like to title their dogs in the sport of Rally as well as a those who just enjoy some advanced work with their dogs.

We will have a course set up and offer one or more run throughs, changing the course a bit each time to challenge the dog and handler. We will offer both Novice and Advanced exercises and will teach the advanced exercises as needed. Every team will work at their own level. 

You may drop in to this class if you can't come to the entire 4 weeks. Classes begin on the first Wed of every month and end of the 4th Wednesday.  In the event of a 5 week month, we will have an extra session.

Class Details: 4 weekly classes. One hour each. Arrive and work on Rally courses. The number of run-through s will depend upon the number attending each session.
Fee: $40 for four weeks of practice sessions. Drop in is $12.00 per class.
Prerequisites: Have a reasonable grasp of Rally Novice exercises and a dog that can focus on working with the handler.

Canine Good Citizen-Urban

This is the most challenging of all the Canine Good Citizen tests.  Our 5 week class will be taught in real life situations-mostly busy, congested city center type settings.  It is a test of practical behaviors in negotiating dog friendly buildings, crowds on  urban sidewalks, exposure to city noises (horns, sirens, construction) and surfaces (concrete plastic, tiles, asphalt) and moving objects (trains skateboard, bikes, carts, etc).  Dogs and handlers will negotiate stairs, steps and maybe even elevators.  We may ride a bus and sit down for a snack or beverage with our dogs. 

Class and test include practice in crossing streets, ignoring distractions on a sidewalk people walking up and petting your dog and stays in and near public buildings on a variety of surfaces. 

This class and test are challenging but will also be fun for the experienced city dog. 

 

Class Details: Shy and Fearful dogs should not take this class until ready. Dogs with reactivity problems may not take the class. No make up classes are available. Be sure you can attend all sessions. If you miss the first class session, you will be dropped from the course and given a refund.
Fee: $100.00 per dog.
Prerequisites: Dogs must have a CGC certificate and an AKC registration number on record to take the class and test.
Dog Details: Dogs should be more than a year old and able to be attentive to the handler in distracting situations

Community Canine (Advanced CGC)-Test Only

The Canine Good Citizen test is a simulated test.  The Advanced (CGCA) Canine Good Citizen test is given in real community situations.  Testing is on the street, inside businesses and employs strangers, objects, noises and visual stimuli not seen in the CGC. 

Testing could be done at a park or other busy location.

All who pass this test receive a title certificate of title from the American Kennel Club and are entitled to wear the CGCA insignia.

Class Details: This is a title level test conducted out in the community. Come prepared to walk at least 10 blocks, go inside places, pass dogs, people and anything else we encounter.
Fee: $15.00 per dog
Prerequisites: Must have passed the Canine Good Citizen test and have it recorded with AKC. Must register your dog with American Kennel club.
Dog Details: Dogs should be over 6 months of age, be calm when walking with their handlers and be able to obey obedience cues with distractions present.

COME TO ME. EXTRAORDINARY RECALLS

GET THAT EXTRAORDINARY RECALL

Do you want your dog to come to you, no matter what, under all conditions and distractions?  Away from danger, away from joggers and other dogs and, well, just for the fun and pleasure of having that connection.

You will work for this, but in the class we offer a high level of support, materialsand methodical instruction to get you there. 

Having fun with your dog Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, means having a responsible and reliable recall.  You can do it.  Join us for this 4 week class to get the best returning dog you can.

Class Details: This class is in 4 weekly sessions of one hour each. Work will be done on both 6' leash and long lines. Dogs will work on collars, not restrictive harnesses or correction oriented equipment. Materials needed: 1.You will need to invest in a long line (not retractable) for daily practice. Long lines can be provided at the first class. 2. Training food-high value 3. A tug toy
Fee: $100.00
Prerequisites: Enough basic obedience to perform a sit, down and stay on cue.
Dog Details: Dogs 4 months and over. Dogs do not need to be dog friendly but must be able to tolerate the presence of other dogs. Dogs will be moving about the training space.

Trick Title Evaluation Day

Does your dog do tricks?  Tricks are fun and entertaining for you and your dog. These sessions start with a practice and coaching session for you and your dog and end in evaluation for the title.  Do the tricks at any of the levels or more than one level. 

AKC now offers a title called TRICK DOG that you and your pal can achieve easily and get to perform your favorite tricks for an appreciative audience at the same time.

Trick Dog days fall under our Canine Good Citizen program and dog/handler performance is evaluated by our own licensed evaluators.

Class Details: Select 10 tricks from the appropriate AKC trick list. Titles are available for Novice, Intermediate and Advanced tricksters. At the Novice Level, You only have to perform 5 of the tricks if your dog has a Canine Good Citizen Certification. We will run Novice, Advanced and Excellent evaluations Once you enroll, we will contact you with a schedule for each category.

Prerequisites: Must be able to perform tricks on the official tricks list. At the Novice and Advanced level, food,toys and clickers are not only allowed but encouraged. You must submit a separate information form with each level you pass.
Dog Details: Dogs should be mature enough to remain quiet and manageable in a group of dogs and people. Dogs will be performing in the presence of other dogs.
