Volunteer Opportunities

Bark (& Meow) Around the Block Event Planning Chairs

Bark (& Meow) Around the Block is one of Berkeley Humane's biggest annual events! In addition to being an exciting family and dog friendly street fair, Bay Area rescues also come together for an adopt-a-thon where hundreds of animals are available for adoption. In 2015, 135 animals were adopted within a few hours at the event!

The volunteer planning committee will partner with Berkeley Humane Staff January through July in 2016 to make this event a success. This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about animal welfare to take on a leadership role.

General Commitment for all chairs:

-Must be available for weekly 1-hour calls 2/1/16 through 7/16/16, tentatively scheduled for Tuesdays 5:30-6:30p
-Must be available for 3 in-person meetings at Berkeley Humane, tentatively scheduled as follows:
   -Saturday 1/30/16, 10-12p
   -Saturday 7/2/16, 10-12p
   -Saturday 7/23/16, 10-12p
-Expect to dedicate anywhere from 4 to 40 hours per month to event planning

We are recruiting for the following roles:

ENTERTAINMENT CHAIR

Responsible for soliciting, securing, and coordinating with the following parties and items:
-Band 
-Generator, speakers and all sound needs
-Food & Food Trucks
-Beer, Wine, and Beverages
-Permits for all food and beverage needs
-Entertainment booths (ex. Photo booth)
-Responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all entertainment aspects, with support from Berkeley Humane staff
-Commitment = ~100 hours over the span of February through July

RAFFLE CHAIR

-Responsible for soliciting and coordinating with local businesses in order to obtain donated goods and services for our raffle
-Responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all raffle details, including ticket sales, raffle prizes assembly and distribution, with support from Berkeley Humane staff
-Commitment = ~150 hours over the span of February through July
-A successful Raffle Chair will feel comfortable asking for item donations from local businesses

SPONSORSHIP CHAIR

-Responsible for soliciting and coordinating with local businesses in order to obtain monetary sponsorships. 
-Responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all sponsorship details, with support from Berkeley Humane staff
-Commitment = ~150 hours over the span of February through July
-A successful Sponsorship Chair will feel comfortable asking for money from local businesses

VOLUNTEER CHAIR

-Responsible for soliciting, securing, and coordinating with volunteers to provide support both before and during the event
-Responsible for planning, executing, overseeing all volunteer details and meeting all event needs for volunteers, with support from Berkeley Humane staff
-Commitment = ~150 hours over the span of February through July

Mobile Adoption Center & Outreach Lead

Berkeley Humane is looking for a lead volunteer to partner with our current volunteer lead and staff to coordinate all outreach and mobile adoptions events. This is a great opportunity for an organized person who is passionate about reaching out to our community.

Requirements

-Comfortable working with a diverse population of people and animals
-Excellent customer service skills
-Experience coordinating schedules for volunteers or staff
-Comfortable reaching out to local businesses and event organizers by phone or email

Commitment

6+ months, 3 – 20 hours per month (varies by month, summer months will likely require more hours)

Foster Support

Berkeley Humane is looking for a few volunteers to assist with our Foster Care Program. Volunteers will partner with staff to prepare supplies, update databases, leash or crate animals, and other minor duties to assist our Foster Program Coordinator

Requirements

-Comfortable working with a diverse population of people and animals
-Excellent customer service skills
-Detail oriented

Commitment

-6+ months
-Sundays, 4 – 6pm or Fridays, 7 – 10:30am

VIDEOGRAPHy Volunteer

Berkeley Humane's Volunteer Videographers help promote our organization, our programs and efforts, as well as our animals available for adoption by capturing footage and producing videos that are shared across Berkeley Humane's platforms.

REQUIREMENTS:

Must be passionate about animals, and have some exposure to filming and producing videos. Volunteers must have access to a computer, internet, as well as video editing software. 

COMMITMENT:

This position requires a 6+ month commitment. Filming must take place on Fridays. Each week, volunteers generally spend 1-2 hours filming onsite, and 1-2 hours editing offsite.

Photography Volunteer

Photography Volunteers help connect animals to loving adopters by taking beautiful photos that show the animal's personality, so potential adopters can fall in love online, and then again when they meet in real life. If you love animals and love photography, this is a great opportunity to do something you enjoy, and for a great cause! 

Requirements
  • Volunteers must be comfortable around dogs and/or cats
  • Volunteers must own a quality DSLR and have photography experience as well as samples to share 
  • Volunteers must have access to a reliable computer and internet connection
Commitment

This position requires a 6+ month commitment. Volunteers must be available on Tuesdays 5-6:30pm and/or Saturdays 8:30-10am.

CANINE & FELINE VOLUNTEER

Berkeley Humane is recruiting Canine and Feline Volunteers to help care for and engage with the dogs and cats in our care!

REQUIREMENTS:

Volunteer must attend an orientation. The next orientation will be scheduled shortly.

COMMITMENT:

2 hour shifts available seven days a week, 7am – 7pm.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION SPECIALIST

Berkeley Humane is looking for an experienced SEO specialist to help optimize our website at www.berkeleyhumane.org. This is a great opportunity for a volunteer passionate about animal welfare to be involved in a crucial part of our marketing efforts and help connect homeless dogs and cats with loving homes.

REQUIREMENTS:

1+ year of experience planning, tracking and executing SEO strategies.

COMMITMENT:

This position requires a 3+ month commitment with 2+ hours of availability per week. Although the majority of the work can be performed off-site, the volunteer must be available on average once-per-month for in-person training sessions and check-in meetings.

WEB DEVELOPER

Berkeley Humane is looking for an experienced web developer to help fine tune our website and improve our users' experiences! This is a great opportunity for someone tech-savvy to use those highly valuable skills to help us increase adoptions and save lives!

REQUIREMENTS:

Thorough knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP, etc. with 2+ years hands-on experience building or modifying Content Management Systems including but not limited to Wordpress and Drupal.

COMMITMENT:

This position requires a 3+ month commitment with 2+ hours of availability each week. This volunteer must be available to check-in once a week, and to meet in person on average once-per-month.

MARKETING VOLUNTEER

We are seeking a Marketing Volunteer to help with various projects including research, data gathering, organizing marketing collateral, and more.

REQUIREMENTS:

Organized and comfortable around computers and standard software including the Microsoft suite.

COMMITMENT:

You must be available to work onsite during regular business hours for a minimum of 2 hours a week.  
This position requires a 6 month commitment.

STORYTELLER

Volunteer Storytellers help promote our animals and organization by writing about them. Whether it's the animals, the people who care for them and improve their lives, or the various efforts we put in place to reach our lifesaving mission, our organization is full of beautiful stories waiting to be shared.

REQUIREMENTS:

Must love animals and have writing experience. Volunteer will be expected to write on behalf of Berkeley Humane, within approved guidelines. 

COMMITMENT:

This position requires a 6 month commitment. Volunteers must be able to dedicate 2 hours a week to interviewing subjects and/or writing articles in various lengths.

General Information Session

We are always looking for dedicated and passionate people to help us accomplish our mission. Volunteers give their time to a wide variety of indispensable roles (see Volunteer Opportunities below for more information). If you’re interested in giving us the gift of your time and energy, please fill out an application and register for a Volunteer Orientation.

Qualifications:
  • Ages 12-15 must volunteer as a team with a parent or guardian
  • Age 16+ to volunteer independently
  • Able to commit volunteering for 6+ months, 8 hours per month
  • For animal care positions, the minimum time commitment is a 2-hr weekly shift for six months. Shifts are available seven days per week, 7am – 6pm.
