About the Class
This is a group behavior modification class that focuses on techniques to reduce dog-to-dog on leash reactivity. Learn counter-conditioning, improve your handling and management of situations while you condition training routines that will help you and your dog relax in the face of over-stimulating events. Consistent use of the routines and principles taught in class will assist you and your dog in developing relaxed behavior, changes that will make walks and outings more comfortable for both of you.
This class consists of 2 sessions of 90 minutes each. During these sessions, you will primarily work on developing technique and timing to turn your dog away from dogs in the environment. Prior to joining the class, you should work on getting an excellent, driven recall to a unique cue as shown in the following video.
Your cue can be an audible or silent whistle or other unique sound. Whistles are the easiest to use. Without this tool, your chances of success are less than with it.
It takes commitment and skill to change strong, driven behaviors so we immerse you and your dog in helpful techniques and routines.
Class Requirements
The best candidates for DWA class are dogs with a history of reacting badly to dogs either on or off leash in an aroused state, which includes hyper-vigilance, lunging, and a general inability to control themselves. Handlers should be prepared to work with their dogs daily, following the protocols taught during the class sessions.
You must complete the “Dogs Reacting” online seminar before taking this class. If you do not complete the online seminar, you will not be allowed in the class.
