QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ages 12-15 may volunteer with a legal guardian in a 1 adult to 1 child ratio.
  • Ages 16+ may volunteer independently.
  • Animal care volunteers must commit at minimum 8 hours per month for 6 months.
  • All volunteers must meet the commitment requirements specified for each role.

PhotoGRAPHY VOLUNTEER

Berkeley Humane's Volunteer Photographers take high-quality photos of adoptable animals so their unique personalities shine through and capture the hearts of potential adopters online. 

REQUIREMENTS

- Volunteer must have intermediate to advanced knowledge of DSLRS, be able to adjust for poor lighting and fast-moving subjects, and be able to deliver consistently high-quality photos.

- Volunteer must have full access to all photography equipment and photo-editing computer and software required to produce and deliver photos.

- Volunteer must adhere to Berkeley Humane's photography and animal-handling protocols at all times. 

COMMITMENT

Volunteer must make a 6+ month (ideally 1 year) commitment to remain on the Photography Team. During which, volunteer will sign up and commit to weekly shifts one month at a time. In other words, during the volunteer's 6 month - 1 year commitment, volunteer may take on several month-long shifts with 4-5 photoshoots (1 per week).

 

Volunteer MUST be available for one or more of the following photoshoot slots. Unfortunately, due to our intake process, we're unable to accommodate any other days or hours at this time. 

-Tuesdays 4pm - 6pm

-Wednesdays 9am - 11am

-Saturdays 9am - 11am

Please email Marketing Manager Sherry Liu with your interest. Please describe your experience with animals, with photography, and provide 3-5 samples of both indoor (ideally studio) and outdoor (natural lighting) photos featuring people or animals. 


 

Graphic Designer

Build your portfolio and help save lives! Berkeley Humane's marketing department is in need of graphic designers able to deliver pixel-perfect, brand consistent artwork to support our adoption and fundraising campaigns, and events. We are in need of both illustrators and production artists.

Requirements

-Must own, use, and be familiar with Adobe software, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and/or InDesign.

-Must be able to deliver editable files and assets using Dropbox

Commitment

-Must make a 6+ month commitment

-Volunteer will accept projects and deliverables on an as-needed basis, and should expect to dedicate 10 hours per month in this role.

MARKETING LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE MEMBER 

Berkeley Humane's Marketing Leadership Committee (MLC) is comprised of experienced marketing professionals who are passionate about animal welfare, and Berkeley Humane’s marketing and communications staff members. The MLC meets once a month at Berkeley Humane headquarters to discuss marketing efforts, brainstorm/address opportunities/challenges and spearhead deliverables.

REQUIREMENTS

Please have ten years of professional marketing experience, able to provide leadership, insight, resources, and/or implement on one or more of the following areas:

-PR: Press and Ongoing Outreach
-Website Marketing
-Social Media Marketing
-AdWords & Analytics
-Direct Mail and Email Blasts
-Photography and/or Videography
-Branding  
-Graphic Design
-Partnerships
-Community Management
-Marketing Project Management

COMMITMENT

-Dedicate a minimum 4 hours per month for one year. 

-Attend monthly meetings, typically the last Monday of the month from 6 to 7:30pm, at Berkeley Humane offices.

"THANK YOU" CALLER & ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEER

The Development & Communications Department is seeking a friendly and cheerful volunteer with great phone etiquette, who feels comfortable calling and thanking supporters on behalf of Berkeley Humane. Most calls result in leaving a scripted voice message, while others involve a short, friendly conversation with our supporters. Callers will NOT be asking for donations, nor are callers expected to have answers for questions. Volunteer will also provide general office assistance, such as filing, copying, preparing mailings.

REQUIREMENTS

-Excellent customer service skills and phone etiquette 
-Comfortable with office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, etc.

COMMITMENT

This position requires a 6+ month commitment. You must be available to work onsite during regular business hours for a minimum of 2 hours a week.

DATABASE VOLUNTEER 

Berkeley Humane’s Development Department has an exciting volunteer opportunity for individuals who enjoy the meticulous and instantly gratifying work of entering data into a database! If you love Berkeley Humane, and prefer to work quietly behind the scenes to help us fulfill our mission, this opportunity is for you! Database volunteers will be entering donations into individual donor records. Volunteers will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. No cash handling is involved.

REQUIREMENTS

-General understanding of computers and databases 
-Attention to detail 
-Desire and drive for accuracy

COMMITMENT

This position requires a 6+ month commitment. You must be available to work onsite during regular business hours for a minimum of 2 hours a week.

CANINE & FELINE VOLUNTEER

Berkeley Humane is recruiting Canine and Feline Volunteers to help care for and engage with the dogs and cats in our care!

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer must attend an orientation. 

COMMITMENT

2 hour shifts available seven days a week, 8am – 7pm.

MOBILE ADOPTION CENTER & OUTREACH LEAD

Berkeley Humane is looking for a lead volunteer to partner with our current volunteer lead and staff to coordinate all outreach and mobile adoptions events. This is a great opportunity for an organized person who is passionate about reaching out to our community.

REQUIREMENTS

-Comfortable working with a diverse population of people and animals  
-Excellent customer service skills  
-Experience coordinating schedules for volunteers or staff  
-Comfortable reaching out to local businesses and event organizers by phone or email

COMMITMENT

6+ months, 3 – 20 hours per month (varies by month, summer months will likely require more hours)

STORYTELLER

Volunteer Storytellers help promote our animals and organization by writing about them. Whether it's the animals, the people who care for them and improve their lives, or the various efforts we put in place to reach our lifesaving mission, our organization is full of beautiful stories waiting to be shared.

REQUIREMENTS

Must love animals and have writing experience. Volunteer will be expected to write on behalf of Berkeley Humane, within approved guidelines. 

COMMITMENT

This position requires a 6 month commitment. Volunteers must be able to dedicate 2 hours a week to interviewing subjects and/or writing articles in various lengths.
