About the Class
This is a group behavior modification class that focuses on techniques to reduce on leash reactivity. Learn counter-conditioning, improve your handling and management of situations while you condition training routines that will help you and your dog relax in the face of over-stimulating events. Consistent use of the routines and principles taught in class will assist you and your dog in developing relaxed behavior, changes that will make walks and outings more comfortable for both of you.
This class consists of sessions, approximately 60 to 90 minutes each (times may vary). The first session is for handers only and is one hour. During each of the sessions, you will work on developing techniques and timing to reduce your dog’s reactions and teach appropriate behavior in stimulating situations. Prior to joining the class, you should work on getting an excellent, fast recall to a unique cue as shown in the following video.
It takes commitment and skill to change strong, instinctive behaviors so we immerse you and your dog in helpful techniques and routines.
Class Requirements
The best candidates for this class are dogs with a history of reacting badly to dogs either on or off leash. Reactivity includes hyper-vigilance, lunging, and a general inability to control themselves. Handlers should be prepared to work with their dogs daily, following the protocols taught during the class sessions.
You must complete the “Dogs Reacting” questionnaire before taking this class. Download the form here: Send to trainthebay@berkeleyhumane.org with the subject line DWA: https://berkeleyhumane.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DWA_CLASS_QUESTIONNAIRE-rev-4-23.docx
