Berkeley Humane Opens Relocated Spay the Bay Clinic in PetSmart
Affordable, life-saving veterinary care is now closer than ever for families in West Contra Costa County. Berkeley Humane has officially opened the doors to its newly relocated Spay the Bay clinic—now operating in PetSmart at 1380 Fitzgerald Drive in Pinole.
This move marks a bold new chapter for the organization as it works to reimagine animal welfare across the Bay Area.
A New Chapter for Pet Families in the Bay Area
Berkeley Humane’s new clinic in Pinole reflects a larger vision: to expand access to affordable, life-saving veterinary care for families across West Contra Costa County and beyond.
“We’re not just opening a clinic—we’re laying the foundation for the future of animal welfare,” said Jeffrey Zerwekh, Executive Director of Berkeley Humane. “This move allows us to expand vital services while we build a modern, comprehensive resource center that will benefit animals and their families for generations to come.”
Why Pinole?
The relocation was driven by the upcoming demolition of Berkeley Humane’s aging clinic facility, which served the community for more than 90 years. In its place, construction is underway for the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC)—a next-generation hub for animal welfare services that will bring together adoption, veterinary care, education, and training under one roof.
This interim move to PetSmart in Pinole ensures there is no disruption in care and allows Berkeley Humane to continue—and expand—its mission of supporting animals and the people who love them.

What Services Are Offered?
The new Spay the Bay clinic provides affordable spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations to hundreds of animals each year—including both family pets and the more than 100 animals currently in Berkeley Humane’s foster network.
This effort is made possible through a new partnership with PetSmart Veterinary Services, aimed at expanding access to essential care in underserved areas.
