BERKELEY, Calif. – To many people, their pet is a member of the family. To others, their pet is their best friend. Are you ready to save your dog or cat’s life in a medical emergency? Unfortunately, very few people are prepared to respond with the appropriate first aid that can prevent a minor injury becoming a major one, reduce their pain, and feel peace of mind that they will do the best for their pet. Berkeley Humane is offering Pet First Aid and CPR trainings! Saturday, July 15’s trainings are sold out, so sign up now for September 30’s training in the morning.

“If you have ever seen a dog or cat hit by a car, it’s terrifying,” said Jeffrey Zerwekh, Berkeley Humane’s Executive Director. “With basic pet first aid and CPR training, you could save their life.”

According to Forbes, 66% of US households (86.9 million homes) own a pet, with dogs being the most popular (65.1 million) followed by cats (46.5 million). In even the most safe and secure of these homes, pet behavior can lead to choking, digesting toxic chemicals, broken bones, and deep lacerations, and professional emergency services may not be convenient nor immediately available.

Berkeley Humane is offering Pet First Aid/CPR training so that individuals will learn the planning and preparation necessary to respond effectively to an animal medical emergency. Students will learn the immediate and temporary care necessary to sustain an injured or ill dog or cat, and to minimize further harm and suffering until the animal reaches professional medical care.

“This class is taught by an American Safety & Health Institute certified instructor,” stated Nancy Frensley, Senior training Manager for Berkeley Humane. “It includes a lecture, discussion and most importantly, hands-on practice.”

Students will receive a pet first aid handbook and a certificate of completion at each class session. Space is limited for this workshop; pre-registration is required.
