Berkeley Humane Veterinary Hospital Volunteer Internships offer the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a shelter hospital. Interns will gain valuable experience in shelter care, basic medical procedures, animal husbandry/housing and more. This position primarily works Tuesday-Friday. All internships are unpaid, but course credit can be arranged. Upon successful completion of an internship, interns may also request a letter of recommendation from their supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with hospital staff to ensure proper feeding, cleaning, housing, and oversight of animals according to Berkeley Humane standards
- Partner with staff on basic medical procedures
- Assist with surgical prep and post-surgery recovery
- Partner with hospital staff to ensure animals have a clean, safe environment
- Participate in routine animal care
- Enter information into database as needed
- Assist with administrative duties as needed
- Assist in monitoring health of all animals
- Interact with clients
REQUIREMENTS
- Pre-vet and veterinary students preferred
- Professional animal handling experience (includes volunteer work)
- Comfortable learning new computer programs
- Able to commit to 10+ weeks
- Able to commit to 20+ hours per week
- Able to bend, stoop, squat, reach, and push moderately heavy objects
- Able to lift 50lbs
- No allergic conditions which would be aggravated by animals in our care
- Comfortable working with unknown animals
- Comfortable with loud noises, dog/cat bodily fluids

- Summer: Approx. June – September, flexibility for school schedules (applications accepted through May)
- Fall: Approx. August – January, flexibility for school schedules (applications accepted through July)
