Big and exciting changes are happening at Berkeley Humane! Construction is underway for our new facility, the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC)—a purpose-built comprehensive pet resource center that features state-of-the-art veterinary, adoption, training, and education programs for the community. As we embark (woof, woof) on this two-year-long journey to make BAARC a reality, we remain committed to serve the animals and the people who love them. Our life-saving programs continue to be available—in new temporary locations.
Where We Are Now
We may be in transition, but our commitment to the community hasn’t wavered. You can still access our services while our permanent home is being built.

Spay the Bay Has a New Temporary Home
Effective May 19, 2025, our low-cost spay/neuter/vaccine clinic, Spay the Bay, is operating out of PetSmart in Pinole.
To make an appointment for spay or neuter services, visit our Spay the Bay page for service details, then complete our Appointment Request Form. Our team will follow up to confirm your appointment at the new location.
Adoptions Are Still Going Strong
Whether you’re ready to add a furry friend to your family or just starting the process, we’ve made it easy to meet your new best friend:
- Walk-In Adoptions
Visit us at our Solano Thrift Shop (1120 Solano Ave., Albany) every Saturday starting at 11 AM. Animals are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Animals in Foster
Some of our animals are in loving foster homes and can be adopted by appointment only. To meet one of these pets, review their profile on our website and submit an Adoption Inquiry to schedule a meet-and-greet.
Looking Ahead: Meet the BAARC

We’re thrilled to share that construction is underway on our new, state-of-the-art facility, the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC)—a name you’ll be hearing a lot more in the months to come!
Expected to open in early 2027, the BAARC is more than just a new building. It represents a new chapter for Berkeley Humane and a new model for animal care in our community. This innovative space will support not only shelter animals but also pet families who need a little extra help.
Why the BAARC Matters
Every day, families are forced to make heartbreaking decisions, like giving up a pet simply because they can’t afford veterinary care or pet food. The BAARC exists to change that.
This groundbreaking facility will offer:
- Affordable veterinary services
- Behavioral support to prevent surrenders
- Pet food and crisis assistance
- Lifelong Support: We’re here for you and your pet for the long haul—with advice, resources, and care to help your adopted animal thrive at every stage of life.
Services You Can Expect from the BAARC
Once the BAARC opens, it will offer a full range of support services designed to keep pets in homes, where they belong. These include:
- Low-cost spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchips
- A pet food pantry for those facing financial challenges
- Free behavior consultations
- Pet loss support groups
- Navigation assistance for families seeking social services
How You Can Help
We’ve been serving the East Bay for more than 130 years. Now, we’re building something bold for the future. But we can’t do it without your support.
Donate today to help us build the Bay Area Animal Resource Center and be part of the next era of compassionate care for pets and the people who love them.
