Berkeley Humane is excited to announce a new partnership with Pet Food Express that brings adoptable cats and kittens to the company’s North Oakland store at the corner of Alcatraz Avenue and Telegraph Avenue. This new adoption outpost creates another place where the community can meet animals looking for new loving homes while supporting Berkeley Humane’s innovative foster-first adoption program.
Why This Partnership Matters
As Berkeley Humane prepares to build the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC), our future shelter and veterinary hospital, all of our adoptable animals are currently living in foster homes rather than a traditional shelter. This approach gives each animal the comfort of a home environment, individualized care, and valuable socialization while they wait to be adopted.
The challenge is that foster homes are not public adoption centers. Without a permanent shelter building, there are fewer opportunities for potential adopters to meet our animals in person.
That’s what makes partnerships like this so important.
By creating a permanent adoption space inside Pet Food Express, we’re bringing our cats directly into the community where hundreds of animal lovers visit each week. Every new introduction creates another opportunity for a cat or kitten to find a family.
A Comfortable Space for Cats
The North Oakland Pet Food Express is one of only a handful of the company’s locations where a significant portion of customers are cat owners, making it an ideal home for this partnership.
Together, Berkeley Humane and Pet Food Express have created a spacious catio-style habitat that comfortably houses kittens while they wait to be adopted.
Pet Food Express team members provide daily care, including feeding and routine monitoring, while Berkeley Humane volunteers offer enrichment, socialization, and conversations with prospective adopters about each cat’s unique personality and story.
A Community Partnership That Saves Lives
For more than 25 years, Pet Food Express has been a valued partner of Berkeley Humane. This new collaboration builds on that longstanding relationship while creating more opportunities for animals to be seen, adopted, and loved.
It also opens the door for community members who want to volunteer by helping socialize cats and support their journey to adoption.
