It is no secret that nationally there is a shortage of veterinarians, and the Bay Area has not been spared! With fewer veterinarians, fewer animals are getting spayed/neutered, leading to unwanted animals creating overcrowding conditions in shelters. To address this trend and in conjunction with February designated as Spay Neuter Awareness Month, Berkeley Humane is launching the “Sponsor a Spay for Valentine’s Day campaign.
Berkeley Humane (Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society) and BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, are teaming up to bring hope to the nation’s shelter pets this holiday season with its “Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope” adoption event.
Berkeley Humane is thrilled to announce that starting this weekend and for the first time since the start of the pandemic, dogs looking for new loving families can now be adopted without an appointment at the shelter located at 2700 Ninth Street in Berkeley.
Animal shelters and rescues across the nation continue to see more animals entering than leaving, amassing a backlog of adoptable animals and creating a crisis of existential proportions. To tackle the problem, the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society (Berkeley Humane) has joined animal welfare advocates, shelters, and rescues in launching Share the Care, a campaign highlighting the powerful impact people can have on shelter pets in their community through even the smallest acts of kindness.
Berkeley Humane (Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society) and BISSELL Pet Foundation have teamed up to do their part in taking homeless pets from kennels to couches by sponsoring reduced adoption fees of $50. The “Empty the Shelters” event will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2, 11am – 4:00pm, at 2700 Ninth Street in Berkeley.
The Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society (Berkeley Humane) is offering an entire day of free virtual presentations to celebrate the relationship we have with our dogs, on Saturday, October 22.
Back by popular demand, for the third year Berkeley Humane is kicking off its Kitten-a-Day Campaign – guaranteed to bring a smile to your face! You can now sign up to have a photo of the most adorable kitten in your inbox every day in October.
Something very special will be happening on Saturday, August 27, from 10am to 4pm, at Berkeley Humane’s large adopt-a-thon event, Bark (and Meow) Around the Block. In addition to over 100 pets available from 5 shelters and rescues, most pets with all fees-waived, three of the most famous “dogs” in the Bay Area will be there – but you can’t take them home!
A significant slowdown in adoptions could be devastating for local shelter dogs. Before the start of the pandemic, the length of time a dog would spend at Berkeley Humane was under two weeks. Now the average stay is more than 130 days with no viable adopters in sight.
Local shelters are filled with available pets so Berkeley Humane is making it easy to find a dog, puppy, kitten, or cat! All adoption fees have been waived for this event and available pets have already received their veterinary care, vaccinations, microchip, and are ready to go home after a brief adoption counseling session.
